BORN AND RAISED IN ST. TAMMANY PARISH - I am 68 years old and a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who has been a resident of Lacombe for the past 11 years. My family is from Paquet in Bonfouca, near Slidell.
EDUCATION - I attended elementary school at Sacred Heart on Bayou Liberty Road, then St. Tammany School until integration. I graduated from Salmen High School with the Class of ’73. While studying Administration and Secretarial for two years at Delgado, I worked in their Engineering Department.
WORK - My first job was with Principal Morris Alfred at Chahta Ima Elementary in Lacombe. I went on to work as a Bank Safety Deposit Clerk; an Administrative Assistant for an offshore oil company and in Transportation and Merchandising at Harrah’s Casino. My work at Kern Reese Attorney at Law led to a position as Court’s Clerk for Judge Reese’s Civil District Court.
VOLUNTEER - I have held a seat on the PTA Boards at St. Leo the Great, New Orleans, and Brock Elementary, Slidell. I volunteer on the only USDA Farm in St. Tammany Parish for conservation of natural resources and to raise food and livestock.
FAITH - Our family faith lineage is from the Sacred Heart Mission, now St. Genevieve church, where I have volunteered with the Altar Society, as a CCD instructor, Youth Ministry, Pastoral Council, Racial Harmony and Black Indian Mission. As a member of the Chahta Tribe, I serve as a liaison between Tom Costanza, Louisiana Council of Catholic Bishop’s Executive Director, and Chief Elwin ‘Warhorse’ Gillum of the Tchefuncta Nation, Chahta Tribe.
PREPAREDNESS - I have volunteered for more than 20 years to support the historic and underserved communities in St. Tammany Parish. I am a charter member of the Community Preparedness Resource Network (CPRN) which played a vital role in recovery since Hurricane Katrina and has partnered with the State Dept. of Health and Hospitals, Homeland Security, FEMA and other agencies to help people plan to survive and recover from disasters.
CIVIC - For more than 20 year, I have attended and monitored St. Tammany Parish Council, Planning and Zoning, School Board and Library Board meetings. For two years I supported the original Honeybee home and land owners concerns about D. R. Horton’s Honeybee LLC Development Project. I supported the STOP THE BUILD CAMPAIGN in St.Tammany Parish, to protect areas that are threatened by rapid, high density development while they have existing traffic, infrastructure and flooding problems. I recently received a Certificate of Appreciation for Outstanding Dedication and Commitment to the Civil Rights Movement from Elder Spiver Gordon of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
